Happy New Year!

We wish everyone a happy and safe New Year, and thank you all for your support in 2012.  We were able to save over 100 animals this year through the support of wonderful people like you!

Some highlights of our 2012:

  • We participated in 3 Animal Rescue Corp large scale seizures, including Operation Sweethearts, Operation Freedom, and were the first responders assisting in Operation Broken Chain.
  • We hosted and sponsored our first Disaster Animal Response Team class in cooperation with TEMA and the State Veterinarian's Office
  • We expanded Noah's Ark Society to include equine and livestock rescue
  • We were able to rescue and rehabilitate dogs in dire, need, and at great expense, such as Grace, Peaches, Blackie and Mazie as a direct result of support of our fundraisers and your donations.
  • The Noah's Ark Society volunteer base has almost doubled in size!
  • We expanded from Nashville only to adding a second branch near Toledo and have started a New England NAS branch.
Looking forward to 2013 we are excited to announce some great news:
  • We are hosting a second Disaster Animal Response Team Training in March 2013 - if you attended the prior class or attend the upcoming DART training then we will be contacting about an exciting opportunity to become a first responder on our Animal Criminal Investigation Team that will be operating state wide!
  • Our Spring Membership drive will have an opportunity to win tickets to Walt Disney World!
  • Noah's Ark Society is actively recruiting for volunteers who want to get involved with a powerful movement for advancing towards a no kill society.
Thank you again for your support in 2012, and we look forward to wonderful things to come in 2013!

2 More Weeks Of Giving To Our Animal Angels

Noah's Ark Society's annual Giving Tree will be up for 2 more weeks.  The concept may be familiar--it is the same as an angel tree, but all of our angels have four legs, and an above average amount of body hair.

Some of our angels are foster dogs, some belong to people in our community that need a little extra help this holiday season, and still others are in the shelter waiting for a family or space in rescue so they can take the next step in their journey to forever.

The requests are simple...for most, the #1 request is a forever home, but other requests are tennis balls, alfalfa cubes, dog food, or toys.

Please consider our giving tree this holiday season.  It can make a difference in the life of a dog, cat, rabbit or horse in need.

Donations can be dropped off in Green Hills, Franklin, Brentwood, Lebanon, or Gallatin, just email us at noah@noahsarksociety.org for the exact address, and watch our Facebook page for daily updates of animal angels.  The Giving Tree is located in My Sister's Closet Consignment Boutique at 4012 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN.

Be One of the Cool Kids - Join the Team!

Noah's Ark Society is actively recruiting for volunteers to join the team.  Please write us to learn more.  We are detailing some current opportunities below, but there are a TON of ways to get involved that take anywhere from 1 hour a month to 10 hours a week.

1) Preventatives Coordinator - keep track of medical supplies, supplements and preventatives (flea/tick and heartworm), and mail preventatives to foster homes on the first of each month for the dogs in their care.

2) Home Visit Volunteers - Visit applicants in their homes to help with the adoption process.  We provide the training, you get to meet great like  minded individuals who love animals, and want to give one a home!

3) Reference Checkers - Volunteer from your couch or office!  Reference checkers just need to make phone calls to vet and personal references and the occasional landlord to make sure that the animals in our care are going to great people who will love them for life!

4) Volunteer Coordinator - This is a higher time role, but someone we really need.  If you are really detail oriented, have great communication and computer skills, we need you!  You will help communicate the mission of Noah's Ark Society to new volunteers, recruit volunteers for special events, and make sure that everyone who wants to be part of the Noah's Ark Society team is in the role that is right for them.

This is just a sampling of current volunteer opportunities, but there are more where that came from!  Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you want to join the team.

Amazing Grace

We first became aware of Grace on Sunday September 23, 2012. Her picture was sent to us via Facebook. Our first thought was "how is this dog still alive?". Grace was skeleton with fur. She is so emaciated you can't even tell what breed she is--hound, boxer and terrier are all current guesses.

We spent two days pleading with the animal control facility to release her to us rather than euthanizing her, and finally were told we could have her---if we were at the shelter at 11am on Tuesday, September 25th. No questions asked, Lori and Sariah cleared their schedules, planned the trip to Jackson, and were there at 11 on the dot to get little Grace.

This is the first photo we received of Grace:

When we got to the shelter, we were told 6 dogs were being euthanized that day, so we sorted out how to maximize the space in our Hyundai Elantra, and managed to bring 3 additional dogs with us for the drive back to Nashville. The photo below is the last photo we took of Grace in the shelter. The black marks on her are all flies:

Too weak to stand, Whitney, an ACO carried her to our car, where we nested her in blankets on the floor where she could have a close watch kept over her for the drive to Nashville.

We finally made it to the vet. Grace's prognosis is very guarded. She is at 20% hydration and her red blood cell levels are off to the point that is seems like a luekemia like reaction. Her body weight is about 30% of what her true weight should be. She also has a broken foot, and her teeth are worn to non-existence.

Grace will be inpatient for an estimated 14 days---possibly longer to maximize her stability before she goes to a foster home to continue her remaining rehab. With x-rays, repeat blood values, fluids, and medications to stabilize her we are estimating an approximate $5,000 vet bill. Donations of any size are so greatly appreciated to help Grace on her way back to health.  To Chip In, please go to this link: Chip In For Grace , or call South Franklin Animal Hospital at 615-595-2337 and donate by credit card.  Just tell them you are calling to support Grace.

Puppy Pa Looza!

2 Days, 2 Locations, 20 PUPPIES!

Please join Noah's Ark Society this weekend for deals, discounts and dogs as we celebrate our first ever Puppy Pa Looza.  We will be showcasing Heidi's puppies--a litter of 6 Australian Cattle Dog Mixes, and our "Tinkerbell" puppies, a litter a 7 Terrier mixes, along with Miracle, Millie, Gizmo, Princess, and Lola!

These sweethearts are all ranging from 5 weeks old to 6 months old and are puppy through and through.  They can't wait to meet everyone this week.

Saturday 11-3 at My Sister's Closet in Green Hills
Sunday 11-3 at Chile Burrito in Brentwood

See you then!

Bring Home A Bunny!

During Operation Freedom, Noah's Ark Society brought a family of bunnies onto the Ark.  Momma bunny is a pure bred Angora.  Daddy is an American, and the babies are the cute fuzzy mix of both.  They have been growing like weeks since being in rescue, and the little ones are now officially teenagers.

We have had a generous volunteer come forward who has offered to donate to offset a portion of the adoption fee for the rabbits, so the adoption fee is only $10 per bunny!!!   If you have kids that want to snuggle a ball of fuzz, live in a small home or apartment and want a friendly loveable pet, then these babies are looking for you.  The little ones have been handled since they were only days old, so they are easy for even young children to hold.

To adopt a bunny, please apply today by going to our ADOPTION APPLICATION.

It's Raining Puppies

We're experiencing a different kind of flood right now at Noah's Ark Society---a flood of puppies!  We currently have Heidi in our rescue, who is our sweet momma Australian Kelpie X (33 pounds of precious) who has her 6 newborns.  While we were working on finding a foster home for Heidi and the little one---a need we still have, 7 MORE puppies came to NAS.  These 7 we believe to be Border Collie mixes, but at 3 weeks old with no momma it is really too early to tell.

If you or someone you know may be interested in fostering a momma and babies, or you know someone looking for a puppy to add to the family, please send them to Noah's Ark Society!  We are overwhelmed with the joy of sweet puppy breath, and kisses.

Heidi needs a foster home!

Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you would like to open your home to this sweet mom and her babies!

Paws on the Pavement - THIS WEEKEND!

Shop for yourself or get a jump start on your Christmas shopping!  You won't believe the amazing deals you will find at our Paws on the Pavement sale TOMORROW and SUNDAY!  Clothes, food, bake sales, dogs, and more will await you.  Please come out and visit us.  We can't wait to see you!

Lab Lovers---We Need Fosters!

This foster plea isn't really just for labradore lovers, it is for all of you who love and care for dogs.  We have 5 dogs right now needing foster homes.  All are young lab mixes from different situations.  Our first new baby is a young lab/hound mix boy.  He is approximately one year old, friendly, up to date on all his shots. He is around 30 lbs, but should be 55-60 pounds--so he has a little eating to catch up on. He was found with a collar embedded in his neck but that is taken care of. Noah's Ark Society will provide all supplies and food for someone to take in this boy, we just need a home for him to stay for a while until he finds his forever home!

In addition to this sweet boy, who is an URGENT need, we have 4 young lab mixes, 2 black and 2 blonde who were dumped on a farm belonging to one of our volunteers.  She has been working with these 4, so they are well behaved, house trained, and just need a new place to stay until their forever homes can be found.  They do not need to stay together.  We can place them in 1 home, 2 homes, 3, or 4...whatever works for whomever is willing to foster.  Because the home they were dumped at belongs to a behaviorist they are close to on their way to canine good citizen trained, so should be a true joy to foster.

Please write us at noah@noahsarksociety.org if you can foster--even if it is just short term for a week or two!  Every little bit helps....and come out tomorrow to visit us at Paws on the Pavement in Green Hills!

Bonnie Is Home, Safe and Sound

AMBER ALERT - Lost Noah's Ark Foster Dog!!!!

Around 1:30pm this afternoon, Monday August 20th, Bonnie escaped from the yard of her foster home in Eash Nashville on Shelby in between 16th and 17th.

Bonnie is wearing an olive green collar with a red tag on it.  We are asking for anyone that can to please come help look for her.

Bonnie is used to living on a farm, and being in the city is going to be very frightening to her.  She may be hiding under a bush or in another backyard.  If you see her and she runs, please do not chase her.   If you have sighted Bonnie, please call or text 615-775-1931 with any information.  A photo of her is below:

Babies On Board

We have some exciting new additions to Noah's Ark that have joined us since Friday.  We were finally able to arrange for a foster for Heidi.  One of our fabulous vet clinics, South Franklin Animal Hospital, will be fostering Heidi in clinic as she prepares to have her babies.  The puppies are due this week, and from xrays, we anticipate a litter of 2 to 3 little ones.  Heidi's story is quickly going from very sad to very happy.  She was found huddled behind a dumpster at the back of a Dollar General store in rural West TN.  The signs of neglect were obvious, from emaciation to flea and tick infestation.  A caring citizen in the area took her in and helped her on her way back to health over the past month while she waited on an opportunity to come to Noah's Ark Society.  That opportunity finally presented itself, and Heidi got a ride yesterday to join us.  We are very excited for puppy breath in the next few days, and also excited that our momma dog, Heidi will get the love and nurturing she needs while she takes care of the babies.  She is accepting adoption applications for once the puppies are weaned, and she will be spayed at that time as well so she won't have to go through pregnancy again.  As soon as the puppies are born we will take applications for them as well.

Momma Dog, Heidi:

We also have new puppies in our family, and on their way to new families.  Franklin went to his new family last week.  Millie, has multiple applications in and will be meeting her new family this week.   Miracle is still waiting on the right family to find her, and Pepper, a 5 week old Chihuahua has just entered our program.

If you are interested in helping support our new babies, please join us this weekend for Paws on the Pavement, order a sticker through our Simple Dog Fundraiser, or make a Paypal Donation through our website.

Operation Freedom Rehab Profile: Annie

Annie is a sweet senior, likely Lab/Shepherd/Mix of Mixes.  She has been spending time with our volunteer behaviorist, and will be the first of our Operation Freedom Dogs to be ready for a forever home.  Below is her latest status update, which we wanted to share.

Name: Annie
Age: 9-11
Special Needs: Emotional Rehabilitation
Details: Annie came to Noah's Ark Society through Operation Freedom on July 3, 2012.  She was one of 110 dogs seized, and has lived her entire life in neglect.  Annie is able to eat solid food (kibble), manuever stairs, and walk on a leash.  She seeks out human attention.

Annie is the top "target" dog right now and continues to make huge strides.  She is now up in the house and has met a few of my dogs.  She is learning how to do stairs.  This dog has a lot of heart.  She now trusts me, and really tries to please me even when she is unsure about new environments.  So although she had obviously never done stairs, she tried really hard to follow me up them.  She still prefers me to "lead" when on walks, but follows happily.  She still gives kisses and greets me with tail wags, is eating well and I'll be giving her more and more exposure to household things this coming week.  I will also be starting to teach her all about "lure training" this week, so we should be able to start bribing her with cookies to do things within another week or two. I'll start taking some pictures of her on our walks for updates.

Annie will be the first one who can go to another foster home.  In a perfect world, it would be terrific if the foster family could spend some time with her here until they take her...so they have an idea of what she is like.  These dogs are still not "normal" dogs, and I find that this is the biggest hurdle with foster families...they expect the dog to become a normal dog in a few weeks....that just isn't realistic...Annie will make continual improvement, but how far she comes back is up to Annie.  The home can have other dogs or not,  must have a crate for Annie, and ideally a home that doesn't want to take Annie with them everywhere...exposing her to new environments is good, but in a slow/steady format versus throwing her into the deep end of the pool.  Annie is still in the process of housebreaking...she hasn't had an accident in a week...but she doesn't have full run of my house either, so a family who understands housebreaking would be important.  She potties easily on leash, but we need to remember that when stressed, Annie is a submissive pooper.

Join Noah's Ark at Tractor Supply on Sat Aug 18th!

Noah's Ark Society will be participating in Tractor Supply Company's Pet Appreciation Week (PAW) with a very special adoption day on August 18th from 10am to 3pm.  We hope you can all come join us!

We will be on site with as many of our adoptables as possible, including our adoptable rabbits!  We will have information on the horses and ducks, handouts, goodie bags and more at this fun adoption day in store.

To add to the excitement, Tractor Supply Company in partnership with Ford Trucks and Purina are giving away a BRAND new Ford F-150 King Ranch Truck and a year's supply of Purina food of the winner's choice to one lucky person.  All you have to do is go to this link to register:

Little Old Lady Spud - Foster Home Needed

Lady Spud was possibly the reigning matriach or the recent Animal Rescue Corp seizure, Operation Freedom Dogs.  She is the sweetest little mix of mixes.  We are unsure of her age, but know she is over 10 years old.  She still has good hearing and vision, and is loving being in a home environment.

In the photo above, Lady Spud is on the dog bed in the center with her foster dog siblings. She loves to follow her foster mom around, and sleeps on the floor in her foster mom's room at night.  She is doing amazing at house training, and never needs crating.

We are looking for a new foster home for Lady Spud, and it is urgent! Though she is doing fantastic, the foster home she is in is not ideally suited for her needs.  There are 10 stairs leading to the door, and Lady Spud doesn't do well on the stairs, so she has to be carried up and down for every potty break.  It is getting to be too much for her foster mom to handle, and not an ideal way for her to adapt to a typical home life.  We would like to find a foster home for this little one where there are no more than 2 or 3 stairs to come in and out of the house and at least one other dog.  Short term is ok, but long term is ideal.

If you can consider opening your home to Lady Spud, please contact us as as soon as possible.  Lady Spud is a charmer who is enjoying her first chance at a normal life in her senior years.

Additions and Adoptions

We would like to give a HUGE congratulations to our recent adoptions: Bella Marie, Olive, and Sammy Jo.  Way to go ladies!  You have an awesome life ahead of you in your new forever homes.  We will love and miss each and every one of you.

While our precious babies have been matched with their new families, we have been busy working at the fairgrounds with Operation Freedom and Freedom Part 2.  Noah's Ark has invited a full ark into the program: 12 dogs, 12 rabbits, 20 chickens, 6 ducks, 1 goose, one donkey, and one goat.  While our chickens have already found their new abodes as well, everyone else is starting their search for permanency.

So, without further ado, meet our cast of characters:

Jethro and Tucker (donkey and goat respectively).  These two boys are best of friends, and must be adopted together!

Our Waterfowl family; Lucinda, Talbot, Sport, Lily, Dandy, Rose, and Violet:

A few of our rabbits:

And the pup crew....these photos are from the emergency shelter at the fairgrounds, to they are very sad.  Look for huge improvements with our posts over the coming weeks as our canine crew finds happiness again:
